MOUND BUILDER
 Human Effigy / Fetish Object
ca. 900-1400 A.D.

This is a very unusual artifact from the Native American Mississippian / Mound builder cultures of North America , a rare figural terracotta clay fetish  ~this is NOT a fragment of a pot.

Note the aggressive facial features , open mouth and slanted eye brows , a face of anger and rage , a SCREAMING man.

The edges of the artifact are finished , this tells us it was not a fragment from a larger vessel. One edge of the object is decayed , otherwise it is in Original condition with no repairs or restoration.  This native artifact measures 4 inches tall x 4 1/2 inches wide.

Provenance: the Honorable Judge Blanchard of Nebraska who collected this artifact in the mid 19th century , which is very early for mound builder excavations.

CAT~SERPENT
 Effigy vessel
Mound Builder culture , Arkansas USA.

This is an authentic ancient ceramic vessel from the Native American peoples of Arkansas during the 12th-14th century AD.

This vessel features the form of the CAT SERPENT , or Underworld Panther, that was revered throughout most of North America and parts of meso-america , some believe that he is the North American Indian version of Quetzalcoatl.

This widely known figure was associated with Shamanic Power and witchcraft among the natives , and if a Shaman was powerful enough , he received abilities which flowed from this magic serpent.

The vessel has been reassembled from about 5 pieces , there is heavy restoration to the cracks which have been filled and the tail and head have been reattached. The vessels repairs are well done and not that noticeable ,the vessel was also sprayed with a clear coat of varnish on the bottom to seal the repairs and give it some bonding / strength.

 The vessel measures 10 1/2 inches wide x 6 1/2 inches tall.

FROG EFFIGY
Native American Mound Builder Culture
ca. 900-1500 A.D.

This is a very fine intact and all original Frog effigy vessel from the Mound Builder / Mississippian culture of central and south eastern North America , with a  reddish/orange colored natural pigment still remaining in the vessel.

This ceramic bowl may have been used to apply ritual paints among the Tribe for ceremony ,  and because it is an effigy vessel , it is likely to assume it may have been reserved for sacred events.

an original example with NO RESTORATION , it has some small loss to one rim , otherwise intact as found.

This vessel comes from the collection of the Honorable Judge Blanchard of Nebraska , collected before 1870.

The bowl measures 6 1/2 inches across X 2 3/4 inches tall.
